So you know what a niche is and you’re ready to define it for your business. Now it’s time to narrow down on your niche. If you don’t know what a niche is, read this article first: 5 Reasons Why You Need a Niche Before Starting Your Brand.
STEP 1
The first step when choosing a niche, is to think about what kinds of skills you have.
Have you taken classes or completed coursework that helped you gain skills that you could use to help others?
Have you held certain positions in your career that helped you gain knowledge that you can provide to your audience?
Have you taken online courses or completed tutorials on specific programs?
Also, it’s important to think about what topics or industries you’re familiar with.
Do you know a lot about a specific topic that you studied for years?
Do you have sufficient knowledge on a particular industry that you studied or worked in?
STEP 2
The second step is to think about the market’s current needs and wants as well as existing gaps in the market.
Have you noticed that several people have asked you how to do something? Have they asked you if there was a way to do something?
Do you often see the same question pop up on Facebook groups that you’re a member of?
Is there a service that you are currently providing clients (perhaps as a freelancer)?
If you’re not sure about this step, you may need to do some digging. Conduct some market research by checking out Facebook groups and subReddits to see what people are inquiring about.
You can also create a survey on Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, or Typeform and ask that fellow members from the Facebook groups fill it out. Don’t just send it to your peers; they may not be your target audience.
STEP 3
The third step is to think about what you’re passionate about.
Is there a subject you can talk about for hours?
Do you have a hobby that you’re really great at and have invested a lot of time in learning about?
Do you already write about a certain topic all the time and you LOVE writing about it?
Do your peers constantly ask you for advice on the same topic and you HAPPILY answer them? Are you the go-to person for a particular subject?
Now that you have thought about all of these things, combine some of these ideas (at least one from each step) to create a SPECIFIC niche.
Not sure yet on what your niche should be? Start writing about what you’re passionate about. After a month or so, analyze your posts and see which ones had the most engagement and which ones were the most valuable for your audience.
Then, you can define your niche from that information and focus solely on that niche.
